Bernhard Gal

Bernhard Gal was born in Vienna in 1971 and works as a sound artist, composer and musicologist. He studied recording engineering at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien from 1990 to 1994 and musicology at the Universität Wien from 1993 to 1997; after a year-long stay in New York in 1997/98 he concentrated on his artistic work. In 2021 he took his doctorate at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg with a study of installation-based sound art. His sound installations combine sound, light, objects, architecture and video and are often site-specific. From 2006 to 2025 he directed the Viennese festival shut up and listen!, and since 2026 the festival LIMINALE. He taught at the Universität der Künste Berlin in 2006/07 and from 2020 on the course in electroacoustic music of the mdw Wien. In 2001 he received the Karl-Hofer-Preis Berlin, in 2003 a fellowship of the Berliner Künstlerprogramm of the DAAD and in 2004 and 2016 the Austrian state fellowship for composition. On the Cybele album DEGEM Vol. 8 – 90 Seconds of Reality (2005) he is represented as composer and performer.
