Bernhard Gál was born in Vienna in 1971 and works as a sound artist, composer and musicologist at the intersections of instrumental music, electroacoustics and installation. He studied recording engineering at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and musicology at the University of Vienna, and after a stay in New York in 1997/98 concentrated on his compositional and artistic work. His sound installations, shown worldwide, join sound, light, objects, architecture and video into often site-specific spaces of experience. As artistic director of the Vienna festival “shut up and listen!” and as teacher, researcher and author he mediates contemporary sound art between concert hall, exhibition and public space.
