Igor Strawinsky

Born in Oranienbaum near St Petersburg on 17 June 1882, died in New York on 6 April 1971; Igor Stravinsky was a Russian-French-American composer and conductor. He studied privately with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov; for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911) and Le Sacre du printemps (1913) were written in Paris. After the revolution he lived in Switzerland and France, in 1939 went to the USA and became an American citizen in 1945. His work passes through several phases, from the Russian through the neoclassical to the serial; it includes the Symphony in C, the Symphony of Psalms, the opera The Rake’s Progress and Agon. In the Cybele catalogue his piano music is heard on Piano Works around Russian Futurism (Vol. 4, 2016), recorded by Thomas Günther on the Steinway D concert grand.
