Born in Moscow on 6 January 1872, died there on 27 April 1915; Alexander Scriabin was a Russian composer and pianist. At the Moscow Conservatory he studied piano with Vassily Safonov and composition with Sergei Taneyev and Anton Arensky; from 1898 to 1903 he himself taught piano there. His early works stand close to Frédéric Chopin; later he moved away from tonality and developed a harmony of his own out of the fourth-based construction of his sound material. His output comprises ten piano sonatas, preludes, studies and poèmes, five symphonies and symphonic poems, among them Prometheus. Le Poème du feu with a part for a colour organ; the projected Mysterium remained a fragment. In the Cybele catalogue his piano music appears on Piano Works around Russian Futurism (Vol. 4, 2016), recorded by Thomas Günther on the Steinway D concert grand.
