Angel Villoldo

Composer

Born in Buenos Aires on 16 February 1861, died on 14 October 1919; Angel Villoldo was an Argentinian composer, lyricist, singer and journalist. He worked as a typesetter, appeared with the circus and wrote for magazines such as Caras y caretas and Fray Mocho about life in the tenements and quarters of Buenos Aires. As a composer he turned Spanish forms into rhythms of the Rio de la Plata. His best known pieces include El choclo, El Portenito and La morocha, with which tango also became known in Europe in 1906. In the Cybele catalogue El choclo is heard on the audiobook Katrin Dorn: Tangogeschichten (2004).
