Federigo Fiorillo was born in Braunschweig in 1755 and died after 1823. The musician of Italian descent was trained by his father Ignazio Fiorillo and began his career as a mandolin player and violin virtuoso. Posts took him to Saint Petersburg, Poland, Riga, Paris and London, where he played viola in the Salomon Quartet and appeared as a soloist at the Ancient Concerts. His duos, trios, quartets and violin concertos belong to the music of the late eighteenth century; best known today are the 36 caprices for violin, which are part of the classical study repertoire.
