François Couperin, known as „le Grand“, was born in Paris on 10 November 1668 and died there on 11 September 1733. As the most important representative of the widely branching Couperin family of musicians, he served from 1685 as organist at Saint-Gervais and from 1693 also at the Chapelle royale of Louis XIV. His output comprises organ and harpsichord music, sacred vocal music, trio sonatas and chamber concertos. His four books of *Pièces de clavecin* in particular, and his union of French and Italian styles, made him a key figure of French Baroque music.
