Born in Milan around 1570; Gian Paolo Cima was an Italian organist, maestro di cappella and composer of the early Baroque. At the beginning of the seventeenth century he served as organist and director of music at San Celso in Milan. His sacred concerti, motets, canzonas and keyboard works join the polyphonic tradition of the late sixteenth century to the concertato style of the new era. His sonatas with basso continuo are of particular historical importance, being among the early forms of the solo and trio sonata in Italy.
