Born in Milan around 1570; Gian Paolo Cima was an organist, chapel master and composer of the early Baroque. At the beginning of the 17th century he served as organist and director of music at Santa Maria presso San Celso in Milan. Among his publications in print are the Mottetti a 4 voci (1599), the Partito de ricercari et canzoni alla francese (1606) and the Concerti ecclesiastici (1610). His sacred concerti, motets, canzonas and keyboard works combine the polyphonic tradition of the late 16th century with the concertante style of the new epoch. The sonatas with basso continuo contained in the Concerti ecclesiastici are among the early examples of the solo and trio sonata in Italy. He is represented as a composer on the Cybele album Vivi felice! (2003).
