Götz Alsmann was born in Münster on 12 July 1957. As a teenager he already played piano, mandolin and banjo in the Heupferd Jug Band; from 1977 he studied German studies, journalism and musicology at the Universität Münster and took his doctorate in 1985 with the thesis “Nichts als Krach” on independent record companies and American popular music 1943–1963. Since 1980 he has appeared on stage with his own line-ups, first with The Sentimental Pounders and from 1989 with the Götz-Alsmann-Band, which has received the ECHO Jazz twice and has recorded for Blue Note since 2007. As a singer and multi-instrumentalist he devotes himself to jazz, Schlager, chanson and swing. From 1996 to 2016 he presented the WDR programme “Zimmer frei!” together with Christine Westermann, which received the Adolf-Grimme-Preis in 2000; on radio he presents programmes on WDR 3, among them “WDR 3 Persönlich”. Since 2011 he has been an honorary professor at the Musikhochschule der Universität Münster.
