Isaac Albeniz

Composer

Born 1860 in Camprodon in Catalonia, died 1909 in Cambo-les-Bains; Isaac Albéniz was a Spanish pianist and composer. He appeared in public as early as the age of four; after studies in Barcelona and Brussels he worked as a concert pianist and later lived in Barcelona, London and Paris. He taught composition at the Schola Cantorum. With piano works such as the suite “Iberia” he created an idiom of his own, marked by Spanish rhythms and colours. Stage works such as “Pepita Jiménez” and “Merlin” likewise show his view beyond virtuoso piano music.
