Born in Caldas da Rainha in Portugal in 1960; João Rafael works as a composer and performer of electronic music. From 1979 to 1985 he studied composition and piano at the National Conservatory in Lisbon, where he completed his composition training with Christopher Bochmann, and at the same time studied electronic engineering. He then continued his composition studies with Emmanuel Nunes in Paris and Freiburg and studied electronic music with Mesías Maiguashca in Freiburg. For „Transition“ for solo clarinet he won first prize at the international Camillo Togni composition competition in Brescia in 1990. His output ranges from solo, chamber and orchestral works to tape compositions and instrumental music with live electronics. He also brought his experience of electronic performance practice to the recording of Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s „Requiem für einen jungen Dichter“ as sound director.
