Joseph Haydn was born in Rohrau in Lower Austria on 31 March 1732 and baptised on 1 April; he died on 31 May 1809 in his house in Vienna-Gumpendorf. From 1740 he was a choirboy at St. Stephan in Vienna. In 1759 he became music director to Count Morzin at Schloss Lukavec, and in 1761 he entered the service of the Esterhazy princes as second Kapellmeister, becoming their first Kapellmeister in 1766. On 15 December 1790 he left Vienna and arrived in London on 1 January 1791; in 1794 a second journey to England followed, from which he returned in August 1795. His work comprises symphonies, string quartets, piano sonatas, chamber music, operas, masses and three oratorios, among them “Die Schöpfung” and “Die Jahreszeiten”. In 1995 Cybele Records released the album Joseph Haydn: The Last Three Piano Sonatas.
