Karel Coninx is a Belgian viola player with a focus on chamber music and contemporary music. He began playing the violin at the age of five with Valentijn Ten Haaf in Hasselt and received the gold medal of the Hasselt Conservatory. At the Royal Conservatory in Brussels he first studied violin with Urszula Gorniak, then viola with Paul Declerck; he gained a Performance Diploma with Roger Chase at the Chicago College of Performing Arts. He played in the Brussels Chamber Orchestra, the Vlaams Radio-Orkest and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago as well as with Musiques Nouvelles, Champ d’Action and The Colorist Orchestra and is a founding member of the SunSunSun String Orchestra. Together with the violinist Claire Bourdet he has curated the freely accessible chamber music series “TW Classics 1190” in Brussels since 2013, out of which the Zenne Quartet emerged in 2019. He plays the viola in “Fille du vent” on the Cybele album Jacqueline Fontyn: Trios (2022).
