Born 1928 in Mödrath near Cologne, died 2007 in Kürten; Karlheinz Stockhausen was a German composer, music theorist and pioneer of electronic music. He studied music, German philology, philosophy and musicology in Cologne and from 1953 worked in the WDR studio for electronic music. Works such as “Gesang der Jünglinge”, “Kontakte” and “Hymnen” opened up new possibilities of spatial, electronic and multichannel music. Alongside his compositional work he taught in Darmstadt and Cologne and developed, with the seven-part cycle “Licht”, a music theatre project on the largest scale.
