Lothar Faber was born in Cologne in 1922 and died in 2005. He received his first oboe lessons from his father, studied at the Cologne Musikhochschule and the Paris Conservatoire and became a soloist of the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1946. As a concert oboist he championed new music in particular; composers such as Bruno Maderna, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Tadeusz Baird, Krzysztof Meyer and Zbigniew Wiszniewski wrote works for him. From 1972 he led a master class for oboe during the summer courses of the Accademia Chigiana in Siena.
