Mariinsky Chorus St. Petersburg

The choir of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg came into being in the middle of the 19th century under the conductor Eduard Napravnik. It took part in world premieres of operas by Borodin, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky; since 2021 it has been under the direction of Konstantin Rylov. Its repertoire comprises more than 60 Russian and Western European operas as well as requiem and oratorio scores, Russian sacred music and a cappella works. More recently it has sung Sofia Gubaidulina’s St John Passion and St John Easter, among other works, and in 2007 the Russian first performance of Rodion Shchedrin’s “The Enchanted Wanderer”. The recording of the St John Passion was nominated for a Grammy in 2003.
