Paulo C. Chagas

Paulo C. Chagas was born in Salvador, Brazil, and is a composer, sound artist and researcher in electroacoustic and audiovisual music. He studied at the Universidade de Sao Paulo and with Henri Pousseur at the Conservatoire Royal de Musique and at the University of Liège, then electronic music at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and musicology in Liège, where he took his doctorate. His output comprises more than 190 works: stage, orchestral, chamber, vocal and solo music as well as electroacoustic, interactive and multimedia works. In the 1990s he was sound director and composer in residence at the Studio für elektronische Musik des WDR Köln; since 2004 he has taught composition at the University of California, Riverside, where he founded the Experimental Acoustic Research Studio. He published the books “Unsayable Music” (2014) and, together with Jiayue Cecilia Wu, “Sounds from Within: Phenomenology and Practice” (2021). He is represented as a composer and performer on the Cybele album DEGEM Vol. 8 – 90 Seconds of Reality (2005).
