Philip Glass was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1937 and is one of the most influential American composers of the present day. He studied at the University of Chicago, the Juilliard School and with Darius Milhaud; in Paris he worked with Nadia Boulanger and the sitar player Ravi Shankar. In 1967 he founded the Philip Glass Ensemble in New York and developed a music of repetitive structures that lastingly shaped his approach to opera, ensemble and orchestral works. With stage works such as “Einstein on the Beach”, “Satyagraha” and “Akhnaten”, numerous symphonies, chamber music and film scores, Glass joins the concert hall, music theatre, dance and film in an exceptionally wide-ranging œuvre.
