Philip Glass was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1937. He studied at the University of Chicago, at the Juilliard School and in Aspen with Darius Milhaud; in Paris he worked with Nadia Boulanger and the sitar player Ravi Shankar. In 1967 he founded the Philip Glass Ensemble in New York with seven musicians on keyboards and woodwind instruments, whose sound is amplified through a mixing desk, and developed a music of repetitive structures. His output comprises more than 30 operas, among them “Einstein on the Beach”, “Satyagraha”, “Akhnaten” and “The Voyage”, 14 symphonies, 13 concertos, nine string quartets, piano and organ works as well as film music, including for “Koyaanisqatsi”, “Kundun” and “The Hours”. He has worked with Allen Ginsberg, David Bowie, Paul Simon, Yo-Yo Ma and Leonard Cohen, among others. He is represented as a composer on the Cybele album The Invitation – Saxophone Quartets of the 20th Century (2007).
