Sebastian Piana

Composer

Born in Buenos Aires on 26 November 1903, died on 17 July 1994; Sebastian Piana was an Argentinian composer and pianist. He began with the violin in 1910, changed to the piano, which he studied with Antonio D’Agostino, and graduated as a piano teacher in 1920; he studied further with Ernesto Drangosch. At the age of seventeen he began to write tangos; Sobre el pucho, written with Jose Gonzalez Castillo in 1922, won a prize and was recorded by Carlos Gardel. Together with the poet Homero Manzi he renewed the milonga from 1931 and gave the old genre a new direction. His works include Milonga sentimental, Arco iris, Viejo ciego, Tinta roja and the waltz Caseron de tejas. In the Cybele catalogue Silbando is heard on the audiobook Katrin Dorn: Tangogeschichten (2004).
