Stephen Harrison is a cellist and Senior Lecturer in cello and chamber music at Stanford University. He gained the Bachelor of Music at the Oberlin Conservatory and the Master of Music at Boston University; his teachers were George Neikrug, Andor Toth Jr., Margaret Rowell and Eugene Lehner. He has taught at Stanford since 1983; there he was a founding member of the Stanford String Quartet from 1983 to 1997, cellist of the Ives String Quartet from 1998 to 2015, and has been artistic director of the Ives Collective since 2015. He is principal cellist of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players and first cellist of the Mendocino Music Festival; he previously held principal positions with the Chamber Symphony of San Francisco, the New England Chamber Orchestra and the Opera Company of Boston. Recordings have appeared on CRI, Laurel Records, New Albion, Delos, Centaur and Music and Arts, among others. He is represented as a performer on the Cybele sampler for the 25th anniversary of the Feedback Studio Köln (1996).
