Born in Saint Petersburg in 1833 and died there in 1887; Alexander Borodin was a composer, chemist, physician and academic teacher. He graduated from the Medical-Surgical Academy in Saint Petersburg, took a doctorate in medicine, became professor of chemistry and was one of the organisers and teachers of the medical courses for women. Largely self-taught as a composer, he joined the Mighty Handful in the 1860s. His works include the opera “Prince Igor”, the symphonies and the string quartets. On the Cybele album Russian Piano Quintets (1998) he is represented as a composer.
