Born 1833 in Saint Petersburg, died there in 1887; Alexander Borodin was a Russian composer, chemist, physician and university teacher. He graduated from the Medical-Surgical Academy in Saint Petersburg, became professor of chemistry and campaigned for the medical education of women. In parallel he developed as a largely self-taught composer and joined the group of “The Mighty Handful” in the 1860s. Among his formative works are the opera “Prince Igor”, the symphonies and the string quartets, in which scientific precision and a pronounced sense of melodic colour come together.
