Born in Iasi on 8 June 1926, died in Bucharest on 8 October 1998; Anatol Vieru was a Romanian composer and music theorist. He studied at the conservatory in Bucharest and from 1951 to 1954 at the Moscow Conservatory with Aram Khachaturian. From 1955 he taught in Bucharest, from 1990 as professor. His music rests on a modal theory of his own, which he set out in the book The Book of Modes; Romanian folk music and Byzantine tradition live on in it. His output comprises symphonies, concertos, string quartets, operas and choral works; in 1962 he received the prize of the Fondation Prince Rainier III de Monaco. In the Cybele catalogue his music is heard on without compression (1998).
