Born in Buenos Aires on 6 August 1906, died there on 19 October 1975; Catulo Castillo was a poet, tango lyricist and composer and the son of the playwright José Gonzalez Castillo. He studied solfeggio, theory and violin at an early age, later piano and composition; as an amateur boxer he became Argentine featherweight champion. In 1927 he went to Spain as pianist and leader of a tango group for a journey of several years. With composers such as Anibal Troilo, Sebastian Piana, Mariano Mores and Héctor Stamponi, Castillo created tangos such as “Tinta roja”, “Maria”, “La ultima curda” and “El ultimo café”. Alongside his artistic work he taught at the Conservatorio Municipal Manuel de Falla, directed it from 1950 and was president of SADAIC, the Argentine society of authors and composers. He is represented as a composer on the Cybele album Katrin Dorn: Tangogeschichten (2004).
