Cátulo Castillo

Born in Buenos Aires on 6 August 1906, died there on 19 October 1975; Ovidio Cátulo González Castillo, known as Cátulo Castillo, was an Argentine poet, tango lyricist and composer. He studied solfège, theory and violin early on, later piano and composition; in 1927 he went to Spain for several years as pianist and leader of a tango ensemble. With composers such as Aníbal Troilo, Sebastián Piana, Mariano Mores and Héctor Stamponi, Castillo created tango classics such as „Tinta roja“, „María“, „La última curda“ and „El último café“. Alongside his artistic work he taught at the Conservatorio Municipal Manuel de Falla, directed it from 1950 and, as president of SADAIC, campaigned for musical copyright.
