Born in Toledo around 1510, died in Naples around 1570; Diego Ortiz was a Spanish composer, viol player and music theorist. From 1553 he worked in Naples, where he became maestro de capilla of the chapel of the Spanish viceroy. In the same year his “Tratado de glosas” appeared in Rome, a guide to the art of ornamentation on the viola da gamba with examples of diminutions over bass formulas and over given pieces. He also wrote sacred vocal music, published in 1565 as Musices liber primus. In the Cybele catalogue his music is heard on Vivi felice! (2003), played by Jeremias Schwarzer and Egon Mihajlovic.
