The Ensemble Recherche was founded in Freiburg in 1985. In some four decades the nine musicians have premiered almost 1,000 works and released around 60 CDs. Their repertoire ranges from classical modernism and the Darmstadt schools through spectralism and the experimental avant-garde to new works by young composers, with focal points including Helmut Lachenmann, Wolfgang Rihm and Salvatore Sciarrino. Since 2012 the ensemble has shared the Ensemblehaus Freiburg with the Freiburger Barockorchester; together the two run the Ensemble-Akademie. In Freiburg the ensemble develops its own concert series and educational formats; in the project “Klasse(n)Arbeit” it works with composition students from European academies. In 2018 the ensemble received the Reinhold-Schneider-Preis of the city of Freiburg. On Cybele Records it is represented on the album Rolf Riehm: aprikosenbäume gibt es, aprikosenbäume gibt es (2008).
