Ernst — in Hungarian Ernő — von Dohnányi was born in Pozsony, today Bratislava, on 27 July 1877 and died in 1960. He studied piano with István Thomán and composition with Hans Koessler at the Budapest Academy of Music; he made his Berlin debut as pianist and composer in 1897. In the following years he established himself, through concert tours across Europe, Britain and the USA, as one of the formative Hungarian musicians of his generation. Alongside his compositional work he was active as a pianist, conductor and teacher and shaped Budapest musical life decisively in several leading positions.
