Ernst, in Hungarian Erno, von Dohnanyi was born on 27 July 1877 in Pozsony, today’s Bratislava, and died on 9 February 1960 in New York. He studied piano with Istvan Thoman and composition with Hans Koessler at the Budapest Academy of Music; he gave his Berlin debut as a pianist and composer in 1897. Concert tours took him through Europe, Great Britain and the USA. From 1905 to 1915 he taught at the Berlin Musikhochschule at the invitation of Joseph Joachim. In Budapest he was director of the Academy of Music in 1919 and from 1934 to 1943, chief conductor of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra from 1920 to 1944 and also music director of Hungarian Radio. In November 1944 he went to Austria; from 1949 he taught piano and composition at the Florida State University in Tallahassee. He is represented as a composer on the hd-klassik album Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal LIVE (Vol. 1) of 2017.
