Francesco Rognoni

Composer

Born around 1585, died around 1624; Francesco Rognoni was an Italian musician and composer in Milan. He was a son of the violinist and teacher of diminutions Riccardo Rognoni and worked as a musician in the service of the Spanish governor of Milan. In 1620 his “Selva de varii passaggi” appeared, one of the most extensive collections on the art of ornamentation of the early seventeenth century, with instructions for voices and for string instruments and with written-out diminutions on well-known vocal works. In the Cybele catalogue his diminution on Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina’s madrigal Vestiva i colli is heard on Vivi felice! (2003), played by Jeremias Schwarzer and Egon Mihajlovic.
