Gebrüder Grimm

The Gebrüder Grimm are Jacob Grimm (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859), two German linguists, folklorists and authors from Hanau. They grew up in Steinau, attended the Lyceum Fridericianum in Kassel and studied law in Marburg from 1802 and 1803 respectively. From 1812 they published the “Kinder- und Hausmärchen”, for which they wrote down narratives by Dorothea Viehmann, among others; their Kassel working copies of the collection have belonged to the UNESCO Memory of the World since 2005. They also researched the history of the German language and literature, wrote a “Deutsche Grammatik” and began the “Deutsches Wörterbuch”, which was completed in 1961. They are represented as authors on the Cybele album Rolf Riehm: Machandelboom – Audio Piece after the Fairy Tale by the Brothers Grimm (2003).
