Georg Büchner

Born in Goddelau near Darmstadt in 1813, died in Zurich in 1837; Georg Büchner was a writer, physician and natural scientist. He studied in Strasbourg and Gießen, founded the Gesellschaft der Menschenrechte in Gießen in 1834 and in 1834 published the socially critical pamphlet “Der Hessische Landbote”. After his flight from Hesse to Strasbourg in March 1835 he took his doctorate in Zurich in 1836 with a study of the nervous system of the barbel and worked there as a private lecturer in comparative anatomy. He died of typhus in February 1837. His work comprises “Dantons Tod” (1835), “Lenz”, “Leonce und Lena” and the fragment “Woyzeck”. He is represented as an author on the Cybele album Rolf Riehm: Orchestral Works (2005).
