The Gewandhausorchester Leipzig goes back to the Große Concert founded in 1743 and is regarded as the oldest civic symphony orchestra in the world. It has borne its name since moving into the concert hall of the Leipzig Gewandhaus in 1781; from 1835 Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy shaped the orchestra lastingly as Gewandhauskapellmeister. The ensemble is at once the concert orchestra of the Gewandhaus, the opera orchestra of the Oper Leipzig and partner of the Thomanerchor in the weekly cantatas at the Thomaskirche. Since 2018 Andris Nelsons has headed the orchestra as Gewandhauskapellmeister; its repertoire ranges from Leipzig Classicism and Romanticism to the present day.
