Günter Grass was born in Danzig-Langfuhr in 1927 and died in Lübeck in 2015. After war service and American captivity he studied art in Düsseldorf and Berlin and worked first as a sculptor and graphic artist. In 1959 the novel “Die Blechtrommel” brought him his international breakthrough; together with “Katz und Maus” and “Hundejahre” it forms the Danzig Trilogy. Alongside novels, poetry, plays and visual work, Grass shaped the public culture of the Federal Republic as a committed intellectual; in 1999 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
