Jacques Martin Hotteterre

Composer

Born in Paris in 1674, died there in 1763; Jacques Martin Hotteterre was a flautist, instrument maker and composer. He came from a family of instrument makers and musicians involved in the development of the baroque transverse flute, the oboe and the musette, and bore the byname le Romain. As a flautist he was in the service of the French court and a sought-after teacher of the Paris nobility. In 1707 his method “Principes de la flute traversiere” appeared, the first printed tutor for the transverse flute; further didactic works followed, as well as suites, sonatas and duos for flute and basso continuo. In the Cybele catalogue his music is heard on Il Ritratto dell’amore (1999), recorded by Jeremias Schwarzer and Egon Mihajlovic.
