Founded in 1954 and having grown out of a radio orchestra; the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra has its home in the House of Culture in Ostrava. Since its first foreign tour it has travelled to almost all of Europe as well as to the United States, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Australia. It has worked with conductors such as Vaclav Neumann, Zdenek Macal, Charles Mackerras, Serge Baudo and Helmuth Rilling and with soloists such as Josef Suk, Lazar Berman, Janos Starker, Placido Domingo, José Carreras and Montserrat Caballé. Its repertoire includes works by its namesake Leos Janacek and by other Czech composers such as Antonin Dvorak, Bedrich Smetana and Bohuslav Martinu; since the 1990s contemporary music has been added, among other things in summer festivals and workshops with the Centre for New Music Ostrava. Its principal conductor is Daniel Raiskin. In 2008 Cybele Records released the album Jacqueline Fontyn: Orchestral Works with the orchestra under David Porcelijn.
