Jean Halsdorf studied cello in Luxembourg, Cologne, Rome and Basel, where he gained the soloist’s diploma with Ivan Monighetti. He played in the World Youth Orchestra and in the European Union Youth Orchestra and from 1996 to 2002 was principal cellist of the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada. From 2002 to 2021 he was musical director of the Ensemble de la Chapelle Saint-Marc, whose programmes ranged from classical modernism to historical performance practice; he has conducted at the Philharmonie and the Grand Théâtre Luxembourg, among others, as well as at theatres in Metz and in Spain. His compositions include a violin concerto, the trio “Vergangenes” for flute, harp and cello and “Chaconne (not by Bach)” for solo cello, all premiered at the Philharmonie Luxembourg; he has received commissions from ensembles in Basel and Zurich. At the Conservatoire d’Esch-sur-Alzette he teaches cello and chamber music and has been appointed director there.
