Jean Halsdorf studied cello in Luxembourg, Cologne, Rome and Basel, where he took the soloist’s diploma with Ivan Monighetti. He was a member of the World Youth Orchestra and the European Union Youth Orchestra and from 1996 to 2002 principal cello of the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada. As musical director of the Ensemble de la Chapelle Saint-Marc he shaped programmes from classical modernism to historical performance practice from 2002 to 2021. Besides his work as cellist and conductor he composes for violin, strings, flute, harp and cello, among other forces, and taught cello and chamber music at the Conservatoire d’Esch-sur-Alzette.
