Jean Sibelius

Composer

Born in Hämeenlinna on 8 December 1865, died in Järvenpää on 20 September 1957; Jean Sibelius was a composer. He studied in Helsinki with Martin Wegelius and afterwards in Berlin and Vienna. With Kullervo (1892) and the symphonic poem Finlandia (1899) he became the musical voice of Finnish national feeling; from 1897 a state pension of honour secured his work. His output comprises seven symphonies, the Violin Concerto in D minor, symphonic poems after the Kalevala, chamber music, incidental music and more than a hundred songs. After the seventh symphony and Tapiola (1926) he published almost nothing in the last three decades of his life. In the Cybele catalogue his chamber music is heard on Strings attached (2002) with Annette-Barbara Vogel and Fulbert Slenczka.
