Born in Helsinki in 1952, died in Paris in 2023; Kaija Saariaho was a composer. After studies in Helsinki and Freiburg she worked at IRCAM in Paris, whose research into electronics and timbre shaped her music. Her compositions combine instrumental sound, electronics and spectral sound fields. Besides chamber and orchestral works she wrote six operas, among them “L’Amour de loin” and “Innocence”. The Cybele album Colours of Silence includes her string quartet with live electronics “Nymphea”.
