Born in Lörrach in 1954; Karl Friedrich Gerber is a composer and sound artist in Munich. He studied musicology in Freiburg, double bass (jazz) with Adelhard Roidinger and physics, which he completed with a diploma. Since 1984 he has worked on mathematical real-time composition, at first on a Commodore C64, and improvises live-algorithmically with formulas edited on screen. His piece “Beautiful Numbers” received an award at the competition in Bourges in 1994; in 1998, with dancers of the University of Michigan, he presented “Improvisation with integers” at the International Computer Music Conference. He builds interactive musical automata, among them a violin automaton whose prototype was presented at the Deutsches Museum in 2012, and in 2019 was represented with an installation in the exhibition “Music Machines” of the World Music Days in Tallinn. On the Cybele album DEGEM Vol. 7 – kontinuum … bruchlos (2003) he is represented as composer and performer.
