Lawrence Schoenberg

Contemporary witness

* 1941 in Los Angeles; Lawrence Adam Schoenberg is the youngest son of Arnold Schönberg. He first studied architecture, then mathematics (master’s degree), and taught mathematics at Palisades High School until his retirement in 1995. In 1965 he organized for his mother Gertrud the founding of the publishing house Belmont Music Publishers, which was to keep Schönberg’s works accessible in the USA, and looked after it from then on. He took part in exhibition and concert projects, designed with his sister Nuria a multimedia exhibition shown worldwide and co-founded the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna with his siblings. In the major fire in Pacific Palisades in January 2025 his house and the publishing house were destroyed. On the album Arnold Schönberg: Die Prinzessin (2008) he tells, in recollections recorded in Vienna in May 2007, of his childhood with his father.
