Lothar Hensel

Lothar Hensel was born in Dormagen in 1961. After studying school music with clarinet as his principal subject in Berlin, he specialised in the bandoneon in Buenos Aires and Paris, working there with Juan José Mosalini, Dino Saluzzi and Néstor Marconi among others. As a soloist he has appeared with orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker and devotes himself in particular to the music of Astor Piazzolla, including his Concierto para bandoneon, which he has also recorded in his own arrangements. He directs the quartet tango fusion and the tango orchestra Septisimo Tango. As a composer he has written film scores, bandoneon concertos that combine tango elements with concert music, the commissioned work “tangomania” for the Jenaer Philharmonie and the chamber opera “Ein letzter Tango für Margot H.” for the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater. In 2021 hd-klassik released Astor Piazzolla: Tango Nuevo – A Symphonic Homage with him as bandoneon soloist.
