This homage to Astor Piazzolla places his Tango Nuevo in a broad symphonic context. Alongside familiar sound images, the programme leads above all to the Argentinian composer’s more rarely heard large-scale orchestral works and reveals their dramatic breath, rhythmic restlessness and dark sonic poetry.
The early Sinfonietta and Tangazo show how far Piazzolla’s compositional horizon extends beyond dance music. In Adiós Nonino and the Buenos Aires seasons, the bandoneon assumes a central, narrative role: between elegy, memory, urban tension and immediately physical motion.
Lothar Hensel, the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen and Rasmus Baumann shape Piazzolla’s music as an independent orchestral language. Tango remains audible as its origin, yet gains symphonic breadth and a multilayered dramatic presence.
