Created in 1996 from the merger of the Westfälisches Sinfonieorchester Recklinghausen and the Philharmonisches Orchester der Stadt Gelsenkirchen; the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen has around 120 members and gives almost 300 events a season. It is the opera orchestra of the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, plays a repertoire from the Baroque to the modern era as well as crossover programmes with pop, rock and film music, and works on numerous music education projects. Its supporting bodies are the cities of Gelsenkirchen and Recklinghausen and the district of Unna; as a Landesorchester NRW the orchestra is supported by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and by the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe in order to serve towns and municipalities without a symphony orchestra of their own. Rasmus Baumann has been general music director since the summer of 2014. hd-klassik released Astor Piazzolla: Tango Nuevo – A Symphonic Homage (2021, conducted by Rasmus Baumann) and Bäche – Orchestral Works of the Bach Family (2023, conducted by Bernhard Forck).
