Jeanne-Louise Farrenc was born in Paris in 1804 and died there in 1875. The composer and concert pianist studied piano with Cécile Soria and with Ignaz Moscheles and Johann Nepomuk Hummel, among others; she learned composition with Anton Reicha. In 1842 she became professor of piano at the Paris Conservatoire and taught there for three decades. Her output comprises three symphonies, chamber music and extensive piano music; in 1861 and 1869 she received the Prix Chartier of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Together with her husband Aristide Farrenc she compiled the anthology “Le Trésor des pianistes”, with piano music from the 16th to the 19th century, which was completed in 1865 in 23 volumes.
