Louise Farrenc

Composer / Pianist / Music teacher

Jeanne-Louise Farrenc was born in Paris in 1804 and died there in 1875. The French composer and concert pianist studied piano with Cécile Soria and with Ignaz Moscheles and Johann Nepomuk Hummel, among others; she learned composition with Anton Reicha. In 1842 she became professor of piano at the Paris Conservatoire and taught there for three decades. Her work comprises three symphonies, chamber music and an extensive body of piano music; together with her husband Aristide Farrenc she also compiled the 23-volume anthology “Le Trésor des pianistes”.
