Born in Paramaribo in 1921 and died in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris in 2017, Majoie Hajary was a Surinamese-Dutch composer and pianist. At fifteen she went to Amsterdam to study piano and composition; in 1949 she continued her training in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, Henri Büsser and Louis Aubert, among others. She appeared internationally as a concert pianist, while her compositional work joins European art music to musical experience from Suriname, Africa, Asia, India and jazz. Her œuvre of nearly a hundred works includes the opera projects around „The Story of Suriname“ and „La larme d’or“, in which colonial history and family memory come together artistically.
