Malcolm Goldstein was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1936 and is an American-Canadian composer, violinist and improviser. He studied at Columbia University with Otto Luening among others and from the early 1960s was part of the New York avant-garde scene around the Judson Dance Theater, the New York Festival of the Avant Garde and the Experimental Intermedia Foundation. In 1963 he founded the Tone Roads Ensemble together with Philip Corner and James Tenney; his work joins graphic scores, composed structures and improvisatory sound research. Goldstein describes his particular sonic practice as “soundings” and has developed it in works for violin, chamber ensemble, voice and electronics as well as in interdisciplinary projects with dance and literature.
