Martin von der Heydt studied piano with Till Engel at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen, graduated summa cum laude with the artistic diploma in 1998 and took his Konzertexamen in 2000; he attended masterclasses with Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Leonard Stein among others. In his recitals he combines rarely played repertoire with contemporary music, including works by Xenakis, Ligeti and Nancarrow. In 1999 he was a co-founder of the E-MEX Ensemble for contemporary music; as a song accompanist and chamber musician he has appeared in Europe, Japan, Korea, China, Brazil, Chile and the USA. Recordings have appeared with Wergo, Cybele and neos, radio productions with Deutschlandfunk, WDR and SWR. He teaches at the Folkwang Universität der Künste Essen and has led a piano class at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen since 2011. On the Cybele album Juan Allende-Blin and the Ensemble (2016) he can be heard as a pianist.
