Max Deutsch was born in Vienna on 17 November 1892 and died in Paris on 22 November 1982. The Austrian-French composer, conductor and teacher was a pupil and assistant of Arnold Schönberg, whose work he championed in France at an early date. After posts in Berlin he settled in Paris in 1924, where he conducted important French premieres of works by Schönberg, Berg and Webern, and became a French citizen in 1948. As a composition teacher at the Sorbonne and the École Normale de Musique he shaped several generations of composers.
