Max Deutsch was born in Vienna on 17 November 1892 and died in Paris on 22 November 1982. The Austrian-French composer, conductor and teacher studied from 1912 with Arnold Schönberg in Vienna, was his assistant and followed him to Amsterdam in 1921. In 1923 he wrote, at the commission of G. W. Pabst, the music for his silent film “Der Schatz”. After periods in Berlin he settled in Paris in 1924, where he conducted first French performances of works by Schönberg, Berg and Webern, among them Berg’s Chamber Concerto and Schönberg’s “Gurre-Lieder”, and in 1948 he became a French citizen. In 1960 he founded the “Grands Concerts de la Sorbonne”. He taught composition at the Sorbonne and latterly at the École Normale de Musique; his more than 300 pupils included György Kurtag and Philippe Manoury. He destroyed most of his manuscripts at the end of his life.
