Michael Wendeberg

Piano / Conductor

German pianist and conductor, born in Albstadt in 1974. He studied piano with Jürgen Uhde, Markus Stange, Bernd Glemser and Benedetto Lupo, and conducting with Toshiyuki Kamioka in Saarbrücken. From 2000 to 2005 he was a pianist with the Ensemble intercontemporain in Paris, where he worked with Pierre Boulez and György Kurtag. As a conductor he has worked at the opera houses of Wuppertal, Mannheim, Lucerne and Berlin, among other things as assistant to Daniel Barenboim at the Staatsoper Berlin; from 2011 to 2018 he was musical director of the Ensemble Contrechamps in Geneva. In 2016 he became first Kapellmeister at the Oper Halle, and since the 2020/21 season he has been its chief conductor. Since the winter semester of 2018/19 he has been professor of piano and piano chamber music at the Barenboim-Said Akademie in Berlin. In the Cybele catalogue he plays the piano on the album Portrait Graham Waterhouse (2001).
