Born 1925 in Montbrison, died 2016 in Baden-Baden; studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Olivier Messiaen and René Leibowitz, among others; key figure of serial music and of the European post-war avant-garde; founder of the Domaine Musical ensemble (1954), of the research institute IRCAM in Paris (1977) and of the Ensemble intercontemporain; internationally celebrated conductor, among other posts chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra (1971–1975) and of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (1971–1977); honoured with the Polar Music Prize and more than 20 Grammy Awards, among others.
