Nuria Schoenberg Nono

Contemporary witness

* 1932 in Barcelona; daughter of Arnold Schönberg and his second wife Gertrud. The family fled Berlin in 1933 and moved to Los Angeles in 1934, where Nuria grew up; she was nineteen when her father died in 1951. In 1953 she earned a Bachelor of Arts in zoology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and in 1955 she married the composer Luigi Nono and went with him to Venice. With her brothers she preserved her parents’ estate, which in 1997 came to the newly founded Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna. In 1992 she published the documentary biography “Arnold Schönberg 1874–1951: Lebensgeschichte in Begegnungen”, and in 1993 she founded the Archivio Luigi Nono; in 2007 she received an honorary doctorate from the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. On the album Arnold Schönberg: Die Prinzessin (2008) she tells, in recollections recorded in Vienna in May 2007, of her childhood with her father.
