Reinhold Glière was born in Kyiv in 1875 and died in Moscow in 1956. After first violin lessons in Kyiv he studied composition at the Moscow Conservatory with Anton Arensky, Sergei Taneyev and Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov. As a teacher and later professor he shaped the Russian and Soviet generation of composers; his pupils included Sergei Prokofiev. Glière’s work joins a late-Romantic, richly coloured treatment of the orchestra to an interest in national musical traditions and comprises, among other pieces, the symphony “Ilya Muromets”, the ballet “The Red Poppy”, concertos and chamber and vocal music.
