Reinhold Glière was born on 11 January 1875 in Kyiv and died on 23 June 1956 in Moscow. After first violin lessons in Kyiv he studied composition at the Moscow Conservatory from 1894 with Anton Arensky, Sergei Taneyev and Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, among others, and received the gold medal for composition in 1900. From 1902 he taught Sergei Prokofiev and Nikolai Myaskovsky privately; from 1920 to 1941 he taught, with interruptions, at the Moscow Conservatory. His works include the Symphony No. 3 “Ilya Muromets” (first performance 1912), the ballet “The Red Poppy” (1927), the Concerto for Coloratura Soprano as well as concertos, chamber and vocal music. In 1938 he became People’s Artist of the USSR, and in 1946, 1948 and 1950 he received Stalin Prizes. He is represented as a composer on the Cybele album Strings attached (2002).
