Born in Cluj on 1 February 1907, died in Bern on 4 March 1992; Sandor Veress was a Hungarian-Swiss composer, pianist and music researcher. At the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest he studied piano with Bela Bartok and composition with Zoltan Kodaly. From 1929 he worked on the folk music collection of the Hungarian National Museum and undertook collecting journeys of his own in Hungary and Moldavia; his engagement with the Hungarian folk song marks his work lastingly. From 1943 he taught at the Budapest Academy of Music. In 1949 he left Hungary and lived until his death in Switzerland, where he taught at the University of Bern and at the conservatory; his pupils included Heinz Holliger, Jürg Wyttenbach and Roland Moser. His output comprises symphonies, concertos, chamber music, choral works and ballets. In the Cybele catalogue a conversation album is devoted to him: Sandor Veress and the Hungarian Folk Song appeared in 2017.
